The Company History

There was once a young, trained businessman who could not let go of his fascination for technology and mechanics. Then in 1961 he got to know an inventor who was busy developing an effective concept for hole measuring instruments (internal micrometers).
Walter E. Pfister supported these inventions with advice, with deeds, and with the money that he was earning from selling office equipment (mainly mechanical calculating machines).
But when, however, after two years of financing, an acceptable concept had still not been developed, Mr. Pfister acquired all the designs along with the patent for the internal measuring instruments. He founded the company of MICROTEST AG, and dedicated his own time from that point on to the further development of the internal micrometer.

The first prototype was ready after about another two years. It was presented for the first time at the Microtechnic exhibition in Zurich. A major Swiss manufacturer of measuring instruments purchased the first device, and then returned it on the grounds that "it was no use".
In the course of subsequent developments, the prototype of that time grew into a precise measuring instrument. Right in the middle of the strenuous development phase, our company was struck by a catastrophic fire on 20th May, 1980. Luckily it was possible to rescue the designs and a few sample devices shortly before the building collapsed. The entire stock of machinery fell victim to the flames, and hardly any of the charred parts could be used.

The work of reconstruction once again cost a great deal of sweat, but finally led to the highly accurate internal micrometer now manufactured by MICROTEST AG. The quality if this instrument is not merely good enough for the measurement needs of today's instrumentation sector - it is better.

Our philosophy demands that we and our instruments take care over every µm, since every µm saved at the measurement stage makes a significant contribution to achieving manufacturing tolerances. Work then becomes more reliable, more efficient and more economical. We expect our measuring instruments to provide highly accurate measurement results under any practical conditions; not just in the laboratory at 20° C, but also in the rough conditions of the production department, where product precision is in fact created. At the machine and in the workshop, measurements are wanted that anyone can repeat, even though the conditions might be difficult, and regardless of whether the temperature is ideal or not. For this reason, temperature compensation and protection from hand warmth are integrated into the most basic part of the construction, in order to measure as closely as possible to ideal conditions. To achieve measurements with the least possible dependency on the person carrying out the work, carbide longitudinal measurement rests and hard ratchets are employed for optimally independent centring. This results in a repetition accuracy of +/- 1µm. To minimise reading errors, a scale with 100 divisions is used. Long-term accuracy of linearity is ensured through structural techniques. The unusually large measuring range opens up a wide range of possible applications, permitting very economical production.

We are particularly proud that the "world's largest three-point internal micrometer", with a measuring range of 400 – 600 mm, is amongst our products. This is another occasion where we should mention that the quality, which here refers mainly to precision, is significantly better than that of the DIN standard.

Even today, we take Swiss quality very seriously. As manufacturers of measuring instruments with more than 40 years of experience, we are fully aware of our responsibilities, and we guarantee that not one instrument leaves our factory without having been thoroughly inspected and being entirely able to satisfy the needs of the tough conditions that are called for. We would like to formally apologise for any delays. Every day, we do everything we can to satisfy our customers' wishes as quickly as possible.
We want to make clear that an internal micrometer involves an extraordinarily complex system of individual factors. During manipulation, the sensitive balance of factors resulting from the influence of hand warmth and other influences is disturbed, and the device must be fully tempered before it can give correct readings again.
Unfortunately, this process is very time-consuming, and must usually be repeated a number of times; bringing a measuring instrument with an unusually wide measuring range to operate with extremely tight tolerances that are to be retained over a long period - that is a high art. We trust that you will forgive us for our sense of responsibility. Thank you.

Our repair statistics indicate that repairs are not necessary until the instruments are relatively old (7-15 years or more). As the user of the instrument, you can make a significant contribution to the long service life of your internal micrometer by avoiding contact with coolant and by keeping it clean.
It is always possible to get into a tight corner, for which reason we have created a facility for our customers to bridge the repair period.
In extremely urgent cases we can most often hire out an alternative instrument.

In the context of the extremely rapid development of the world market, we too are increasingly forced to make our production more efficient and more economical. In spite of this, the market insists on increasingly advanced technology, and that means that we have to make large investments. In order to stay competitive we are doing everything we can to keep prices as low as possible. To prevent dumping, we have for years maintained a strict and equitable sales price policy in respect of both end users and traders.

In Europe, and particularly in Switzerland, Germany and Austria, our instruments hold a share of about 20% of the market. Our close observation of the market and our close contact with customers both help us to continuously improve our internal micrometers, with the effect that demands for ever greater accuracy can be satisfied. Our sales distribution network is continuously growing in Europe, in the Russian republics, India, Asia and Australia.

Our motto:

You can only stay at the front by moving forwards.
